Television & Video Production, Emphasis
B.A. in Media Production with an emphasis in Television & Video Production
Students in the Media Production, TV & Video Production emphasis learn how to plan, shoot, and edit content for television, streaming, and digital platforms. They gain hands-on experience with studio and field production, working with professional cameras, lighting and audio gear, control rooms, and industry-standard editing software to produce news, entertainment, documentary, and promotional content. Students collaborate on JMC Studios programs such as Good Morning Marshall, HerdFlix and MU Report, and other Marshall student media projects, where they take on roles such as producer, director, technical director, camera operator, and editor in real production environments. This emphasis prepares students for careers in television production, video content creation, live event production, and a wide range of media industries that rely on high-quality visual storytelling.
Distinctive Features of the Program
Students who graduate with their degree in Media Production with an emphasis in TV & Video Production, are career ready with a number of skills and credentials at their disposal, including:
- pre-production planning skills and scriptwriting for video; studio and field camera operation; professional lighting and audio recording; directing and technical directing for live and recorded productions; and non-linear editing using software such as Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects, Audition, and related tools.
Students learn to build complete television and video projects from concept to final export, manage production schedules and crews, and create content tailored for broadcast, streaming, and social media platforms.
Additionally, students develop strong soft skills essential for success in production environments, including clear communication, teamwork and collaboration on set, problem-solving under deadline pressure, adaptability during live and on-location shoots, time management, leadership in crew roles, and creativity in visual storytelling and project development.
JMC Studios serves as the official student organization for the school of journalism’s visual media. The school offers a variety of tailored programming, all of it student-run, student-generated, and student-produced in keeping with a long-running commitment to ‘hands on’ learning.
Good Morning Marshall is JMC Studios' newest content outlet. In collaboration with the department of geography, GMM brings paid student staff and volunteers from journalism and meteorology together to create and distribute a morning broadcast. The show has a Marshall focus on school happenings, local weather, and Marshall sports.
For content creators whose interest may not be news, the school offers Herdflix, a variety show format that showcases short sketches, music videos, and entertainment geared more toward social media. Student in various Marshall journalism classes also ‘do it all’ for Herdflix, just as they do for the two programs above, including content creation, show scripting and organization, and studio production and uploading of the finished programs.
