Description
The minor in Applied Research in Health and Movement Sciences allows for students, who are not majoring in Kinesiology, to make research a part of their undergraduate studies while completing a major. This minor will prepare students for research in graduate level academic programs and/or as a research assistant upon graduation of their undergraduate degree program.
Program Goals
The goals of the Minor in Applied Research in Health and Movement Sciences are:
- Students will gain knowledge in research methods,
- Students will gain knowledge in statistical methods including statistical software,
- Students will gain knowledge in research writing and presentation methods,
- Students will apply their knowledge of research methods, statistical methods, and research writing methods to a research project.
Admission
This minor is open to students who are not majoring in kinesiology. The following must be met before HS 370 and/or HS 470 will be permitted to be registered for:
- A minimum 2.5 GPA in major,
- C or better in all courses used to fulfill the minor requirements,
- Prior to being permitted to register for HS 370 Intro to Research Methods in Health & Movement Sciences and/or HS 470 Applied Research in Health & Movement Sciences the student must:
- Have a written agreement with a faculty member of support that includes a description of the intended research project,
- Have a completed IRB training certificate for research integrity/safety appropriate for research being conducted,
- Have a timeline of research data collection, interpretation, and completion,
- Identify an appropriate platform to present and/or publish the research such as:
- A college research day poster
- University research day poster
- Undergraduate research day at the capital poster
- MU School of Medicine Health Sciences research day poster
- Journal intent to publish
- Conference presentation (oral or poster)
- Other appropriate platform to present/publish student work
