The Corrections Area of Emphasis is designed for students who are interested in the supervision, management, and rehabilitation of individuals within correctional environments. This emphasis focuses on the structures and functions of prisons, community corrections, probation and parole, and reintegration strategies. Coursework deepens understanding of how correctional philosophies and practices impact offenders, staff, and communities, and explores topics such as juvenile justice, correctional rehabilitation, and administrative issues in corrections. Students who pursue this emphasis gain specialized knowledge and skills that can help prepare them for careers as correctional officers, probation or parole officers, case managers, or rehabilitation specialists, as well as roles in juvenile justice and community programs. While an area of emphasis is not required for the Criminal Justice degree, it can be especially beneficial for students who are certain they want to work in the corrections field. Students who declare this emphasis will also have it noted on their official transcript upon graduation.
